Why
Turbo? |

|
Why
put a Turbo on a 10.5:1 V-8 LT1 motor?
A better Question is why not.
I have always looked to Porsche for race car performance.
But don't be fooled by the nice guy image of Volvo.
Some of the fastest stock 4 door sedans and wagons around
are Volvos. Over the last 9 or 10 years Volvo has a created a legacy of inline turbo
intercooled 4, 5, 6, cylinder cars weighting in At 4500+ Lbs. All doing 15.5 or better. |
 |
Here we have a
"Bone stock "
Impala SS LT1
Well the engine is stock.
MMmmm..
Chrome Rims!
|
A bone stock Impala will pull 15.5s in the quarter. But spend a
little money on intake, torch in some hi-flow mufflers 160 stat and you could get
into the 14 second club. |

Why
not go Big Block or LT4?
The Turbo Technologies Kit (for example)
comes as a complete bolt on kit meant for a totally stock Impala SS. Around $4700.
Any other mod you do are extra. Although transmission and traction upgrades would be
highly suggested (from me). For under $5K you can have all the power any sane person
could want, you could still save for heads, tires, exhaust and pistons for a later date.
"So money and Time would be my answer ." Bang for the buck might go to LT4 block
swap with a good cam, intake, and rockers. Dal ?

Why
Turbo when you can Supercharge?
Instantaneous boost.
Is almost a myth. With the dual screw type charger Yes. But if your looking at a ATI or Vortech no way. You will see the boost
come on from 3500 to 5600 if your lucky. You won't see this in any advertisement.
On a T04 LT1 you can see boost a s low as 2500 RPMs and as much boost as you have courage
for. (plus some lag)
IMHO a T04 is a very small turbo for a 5.7 ltr motor and would spool pretty darn
fast.
With a super charger you could
put it on the car and buy a helmet in the same
afternoon. |
 |
Got NOS?
And then there's NOS. I know its fast and affordable. Some Impala SS Drag Racers have proven
it as a way to go real fast
with a moderate investment. Does the sound of an SS purging the lines and the fear it
brings to your victims puts a smile on your face then maybe NOS might be 4
you. |
Put LT-1 NOS motor pic here... |

Warning:
Turbo is not for the timid !
Detonation is
always a concern. Not to mention other related expenses like eating up lots of high
octane, and killing a set of performance tires
once a year. The allure of more boost and further modification will call you out in your
sleep. It is also known that the 4LE60 can fry or die on a stock Impala SS add 150+ extra
Hp to the mix and your asking for trouble.
My Point "Do your home
work or have lots a money!"
